AAC & PECS: Communication Without Limits

For children who are nonverbal or minimally verbal, alternative communication methods can be life-changing. And here is something important: AAC does not prevent speech -- research shows it often supports it.

AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)

AAC includes any method of communication beyond traditional speech:

Some children develop verbal speech with support, while others find their voice through AAC, signs, or a combination. What matters most is that your child can communicate effectively -- and that is something we can absolutely help with. Research shows that AAC does not prevent speech; in many cases, it actually supports verbal development. Our focus is on giving your child reliable ways to express themselves, connect with you, and participate in their world.
This is a very common concern, and the research is clear: AAC does not prevent speech development. In fact, studies consistently show that AAC often supports and encourages verbal communication. Think of it this way -- when a child has a reliable way to communicate, it reduces frustration and creates more opportunities for language learning. We see many children who use AAC to communicate while also developing verbal skills over time. AAC gives your child a voice NOW, and that is never a bad thing.
School-based speech therapy is designed to support educational access -- it focuses on skills needed in the classroom. Our therapy is more comprehensive and individualized. We can work on functional communication across all environments, provide parent coaching so you can support progress at home, and address goals that may not fit within educational requirements. Many families use both -- and we are happy to coordinate with your school SLP so everyone is working toward the same goals.

We use evidence-based approaches like AAC and PECS to help children develop functional communication skills. Communication does not require speech. Our focus is on helping your child express themselves effectively and build meaningful connections -- using whatever methods work best for them.
Yes, and we consider it essential. When therapies are coordinated, your child benefits from consistent strategies across settings. We regularly communicate with ABA therapists, OTs, and school teams. We can attend team meetings, share progress notes, and align our goals with what others are working on. You should not have to be the translator between all your child's therapists -- that is part of our job.
We will be honest with you: autism speech therapy is often a longer journey than therapy for other conditions. The duration varies based on your child's individual needs, goals, and how they respond to intervention. Some families work with us intensively for a period, then transition to less frequent sessions. Others maintain ongoing support as their child grows and communication needs change.
