From Parents Who Have Been Where You Are

Real families, real progress, real understanding.

After years of therapy that didn't seem to fit, we finally found a team that understands our son. They don't try to change who he is -- they help him communicate in ways that work for HIM. The progress has been incredible.

Sarah M.
Parent of 7-year-old, 2 years with STC

What I appreciate most is that they actually coordinate with our ABA team and the school. I'm not playing telephone between three different therapists anymore. They come to IEP meetings and advocate for my daughter.

Jennifer L.
Parent of 5-year-old with AAC device

My son is nonverbal and I was scared AAC would mean he'd never talk. They explained that AAC actually supports speech development -- and they were right. He's using his device AND starting to vocalize more. I wish we'd started sooner.

Maria G.
Parent of 4-year-old, PECS graduate

AAC Positive

We embrace all forms of communication. AAC is not a last resort -- it is a powerful tool that can support or replace speech.

Not Sure If Speech Therapy Is the Right Next Step?

That is okay. Let's talk through your specific situation -- no pressure, no commitment. Just honest guidance about whether we can help.

AAC & PECS: Communication Without Limits

For children who are nonverbal or minimally verbal, alternative communication methods can be life-changing. And here is something important: AAC does not prevent speech -- research shows it often supports it.

AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)

AAC includes any method of communication beyond traditional speech:

  • Sign language and gestures
  • Picture boards and communication books
  • Visual supports and schedules
  • Speech-generating devices and apps

AAC can be a complete communication system -- and that is a positive thing. The goal is connection and expression, not just spoken words.

PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)

PECS teaches children to communicate by exchanging pictures:

  • Builds understanding of communication as exchange
  • Progresses from simple requests to full sentences
  • Evidence-based with strong research support
  • Can be used alongside speech development

Many families find PECS reduces frustration immediately while building toward more complex communication.

Communication Challenges We Support

Every child with autism has their own communication profile. Here are some common areas where we help.

Nonverbal or Minimally Verbal

Helping your child find their voice -- whether through speech, AAC, signs, or a combination that works for them.

Social Communication

Supporting conversation skills, turn-taking, and understanding social situations in ways that feel natural to your child.

Expressive Language

Helping your child express wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings -- reducing frustration for everyone.

Receptive Language

Improving understanding of language, instructions, and questions so your child can participate more fully.

Pragmatic Language

Supporting the "unwritten rules" of communication like reading situations, understanding tone, and context.

Questions Parents Often Ask

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and we understand why it keeps you up at night. The honest answer is: every child is different. Some children develop verbal speech with support, while others find their voice through AAC, signs, or a combination. What matters most is that your child can communicate effectively -- and that is something we can absolutely help with. Research shows that AAC does not prevent speech; in many cases, it actually supports verbal development. Our focus is on giving your child reliable ways to express themselves, connect with you, and participate in their world.
This is a very common concern, and the research is clear: AAC does not prevent speech development. In fact, studies consistently show that AAC often supports and encourages verbal communication. Think of it this way -- when a child has a reliable way to communicate, it reduces frustration and creates more opportunities for language learning. We see many children who use AAC to communicate while also developing verbal skills over time. AAC gives your child a voice NOW, and that is never a bad thing.
School-based speech therapy is designed to support educational access -- it focuses on skills needed in the classroom. Our therapy is more comprehensive and individualized. We can work on functional communication across all environments, provide parent coaching so you can support progress at home, and address goals that may not fit within educational requirements. Many families use both -- and we are happy to coordinate with your school SLP so everyone is working toward the same goals.
Absolutely. Working with nonverbal and minimally verbal children is actually one of our specialties. We use evidence-based approaches like AAC and PECS to help children develop functional communication skills. Communication does not require speech. Our focus is on helping your child express themselves effectively and build meaningful connections -- using whatever methods work best for them.
Yes, and we consider it essential. When therapies are coordinated, your child benefits from consistent strategies across settings. We regularly communicate with ABA therapists, OTs, and school teams. We can attend team meetings, share progress notes, and align our goals with what others are working on. You should not have to be the translator between all your child's therapists -- that is part of our job.
We will be honest with you: autism speech therapy is often a longer journey than therapy for other conditions. The duration varies based on your child's individual needs, goals, and how they respond to intervention. Some families work with us intensively for a period, then transition to less frequent sessions. Others maintain ongoing support as their child grows and communication needs change. We regularly reassess goals and adjust frequency based on progress. We are committed to being transparent about what is realistic.
