Articulation disorders affect how clearly a child produces speech sounds. Here are common signs to watch for.
Leaving off sounds at the ends of words or substituting easier sounds for harder ones consistently past the expected age.
When unfamiliar adults or peers struggle to understand your child, even though you can interpret what they say.
Tongue placement errors causing a frontal or lateral lisp, making S and Z sounds unclear or distorted.
Your child avoids talking, gets upset when not understood, or relies on gestures instead of words to communicate.
Articulation therapy teaches your child how to produce sounds correctly through structured, play-based activities.
"Our son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 4. The first services we received was speech therapy as he was unable to express himself. We were lucky enough to have been paired with Stacey. Our son has been in speech therapy for almost a year now and has improved so much. He is always excited to go see Mrs. Stacey. We are forever grateful."— Lopez Family, Dixon, CA
"STC helped me ease my daughter into attending sessions independently instead of needing me to accompany her to every session, which has given her more confidence. My daughter looks forward to her therapy every week. We've experienced other speech therapy service providers and STC is by far our favorite. It feels like a second home."— Ann & Rose, Vacaville, CA
Articulation disorders can result from a variety of factors including oral-motor weakness, hearing difficulties, developmental delays, or structural differences. In many cases, no single cause is identified. A speech-language evaluation can determine the specific nature and contributing factors.
By age 3, familiar listeners should understand about 75% of what a child says. By age 4-5, most children are understood by unfamiliar listeners most of the time. If your child is frequently misunderstood for their age, an evaluation is recommended.
Duration depends on the number and type of sound errors. Many children make significant progress in 3-6 months of weekly therapy. More complex cases may require longer. We track progress with objective data and adjust the plan accordingly.
